Welcome to the website of Dr Andrew Ellis.

OrthoNorth is a medical practice based in St Leonards, Sydney, NSW which specialises in reconstructive orthopaedic surgery aimed at restoring function and quality of life to individuals affected by injury, arthritis and illness affecting the musculoskeletal system.

The goal of OrthoNorth is to provide quality, teaching hospital level service to patients in both the local community and across wider Australia. Avenues for patient review include private rooms and through clinics at Royal North Shore Hospital. Individual, personalised and compassionate care are key attributes of OrthoNorth. OrthoNorth is not an "orthopaedic factory" nor is it the sort of practice in which anything but the patients are put first. We have no external shareholders and are definitely not "corporate".

Dr Ellis specialises in:

  • Joint replacement (arthroplasty) of the hip and knee.
  • Musculoskeletal trauma and injury, including fracture management.
  • Reconstruction of the lower limb, especially due to neurological conditions.

Dr Ellis has his private practice at AMA House, 69 Christie Street, St Leonards, Sydney. He is a Visiting Medical Officer with full privileges at North Shore Private Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards. He is also a Visiting Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery at Hunters Hill Private Hospital.

Dr Ellis is also an orthopaedic surgeon in the Australian Defence Force. Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Ellis has much experience in providing support to various missions in austere environments overseas.

How we can help you:

1.    Joint Replacement of the hip and knee (joint arthroplasty).

Joint replacement is a commonly performed operation to relieve pain from arthritic conditions. Often simple activities of daily living can be seriously affected by these conditions. Dr Andrew Ellis has sub-specialist training in joint replacement. First time (primary) and subsequent joint replacement (revision) forms the core part of his reconstructive practice. Techniques such as computer navigation, bone grafting and complex reconstruction implants are available and frequently used. Because of the experience gained working closely with the arthritis and the oncology (cancer) teams OrthoNorth has particular expertise in these areas.

2.    Musculoskeletal trauma and injury, including fracture management.

Major injury, including the management of fractures and dislocations, is a major part of the practice expertise. Dr Andrew Ellis is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at RNSH and covers about 20% of the general orthopaedic on call roster. He cares for adults and children with both major and minor injury, especially fractures (of all types). The practice is available to see patients with factures at short notice and, if necessary, arrange treatment at nearby public or private hospitals.

The management of infection in bone and joint and fracture non union is another area in which the practice can offer solutions

3.    Reconstruction of the lower limb, especially due to neurological conditions.

Over the last ten years this has become an important part of the practice. Dr Andrew Ellis works very closely with Dr Grace Warren, the renowned reconstructive surgeon, in managing the musculoskeletal effects of neurological conditions of the lower limb. These are conditions of paralysis and spasticity that often lead to imbalance in muscle action on joints, deformity and loss of function. Such conditions include foot drop due to nerve lesion or injury, neuropathic ulceration (due to diabetes or spinal injury) and peripheral neuropathy (eg Charcot-Marie-Tooth).

Physiotherapists and other interested parties see Post operative re-education for tibialis posterior transfer for correction of foot drop caused by tibialis anterior muscle paralysis and other causes. (PDF 37kb)

4.    Conditions of the hip in adults.

The practice has a specific interest in hip conditions affecting adults including hip dysplasia, labral pathology and gluteal enthesopathy (more commonly known as trochanteric bursitis). Hip arthroscopy is able to be performed when indicated

5.     Consultative service in patients with multi system disease.

There are many patients with musculoskeletal conditions who require careful consideration of the impact of other significant illness. Dr Andrew Ellis regularly sees patients who require a holistic response to their localised musculoskeletal disability. The teaching hospital links allow knowledge of and links to many resources and colleagues to help care for patients with significant co-morbidities.

6.    Management of serious infection of bone and joint or joint replacement infection.

Dr Andrew Ellis works closely with microbiologists at RNSH and will readily see patients with known or suspected bone or joint infection. The practice is experienced at managing serious infection around joint replacement and has the ability to admit such patients to major private or public hospitals for the multidisciplinary care required

7.    Home or Hospital visits.

By arrangement with a referring GP the practice will visit patients in nearby nursing homes, residences or rehabilitation or private hospitals. There is good disabled access via the rooms in AMA House. Patients who require ambulance transport will be usually seen at RNSH where there are provisions for nursing care, toileting, x-ray and access during an outpatient consultation. Please call the rooms to discuss special access needs.

How we can't help you:

Dr Andrew Ellis no longer sees patients with conditions of the shoulder or upper limb (apart from fractures), conditions of the hand, spinal injury and degeneration, sports injuries of the knee, patients requiring ligament reconstruction of the knee, or conditions of the foot and ankle (eg bunions). He has good colleagues that he can recommend in all these areas.
